D Mannose

D Mannose (occasionally spelled d-mannose, dmannose or simply mannose) is a naturally occurring sugar molecule that can be found in some plants, including cranberries. D mannose is frequently used to treat and prevent UTI's (urinary tract infections), bladder infections and cystitis.

The vast majority of D mannose consumed is not metabolised by the body and is instead passed unchanged in urine and that's exactly how D Mannose can help clear UTI and bladder infections. D mannose has the ability to "stick" to undesirable bacteria (E coli) during its journey through the urinary tract and thus bind to UTI causing bacteria.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a catch all term for what many know as "water infections". A UTI can be a kidney infection and also a bladder infection, such as cystitis. The vast majority (up to 90%) of urinary tract infections are caused by E Coli bacteria. When certain E coli bacteria pass though the urinary tract they have the ability to stick or glue themselves onto the lining of the bladder. It's this sticking mechanism that allows D mannose to work so effectively.

Certain E. coli bacteria have this ability due this due their projections (called pilus) which have special sticky binding proteins on them (called lectins). These sticky, lectin containing pilus projections are what allows the bacteria to resist being passed away when we urinate; they glue themselves to the lining of the urinary tract and start to proliferate, causing all the symptoms of a UTI.

When D mannose is consumed it largely passes straight though the body unchanged; it's urinated out. Just as the E .coli bacteria sticks to the lining of the urinary tract, it also sticks to the passing D mannose, beating the bacteria at its own game! The D mannose-bacteria complex is then safely urinated out.

How Much D Mannose Should I Take?

If you're acutely suffering from a UTI we recommend taking 2 grams (4 capsules, 1 teaspoon) every 3 hours. Continue as the symptoms subside for a few days just to be sure that the majority of the bacteria has been washed away.

For those looking to maintain a healthy bladder, we recommend taking 1 gram (2 capsules, 1/2 a teaspoon daily) for preventative purposes.
