Nootropics and Smart Supplements

Nootropics, (pronounced "noo-trop-icks") also commonly called smart supplements, smart drugs and cognitive enhancers , are a category of nutritional supplements that target the brain, support cognitive processes and provide cognitive enhancement. In particular nootropic supplements are designed to support concentration, mood, intelligence, motivation and memory.

Many nootropics and cognitive enhancers work to enhance mental function by altering neurotransmitters such as acetylcholine, serotonin and dopamine which have roles in concentration, mood and supporting attention span. Others work by stimulating nerve growth, protecting against damage to the brain and improving learning rate.

What Exactly Is A Nootropic?

Various criteria has been suggested for defining nootropics. After all, cognition can be enhanced with a cup of coffee, so isn't coffee a nootropic? Not exactly, coffee is best thought of as a "cognitive enhancer" as opposed to nootropic. Coffee comes with a tolerance whereas a nootropic substance shouldn't.

Dr Corneliu E Girgea, the first man to synthesise piracetam laid out some basic criteria for defining a nootropic;

1. Memory and learning should be enhanced,
2. The substance should protect the brain from chemical or physical assault,
3. The substance should provide few side effects and low toxicity,
4. Subcortical mechanisms in the brain should be enhanced,
5. The brain is protected against certain disruptive agents (eg low oxygen),

As such, all nootropics can be called cognitive enhancers, but not all cognitive enhancers can be called nootropics.

Designing A Nootropic Stack

We cover this in great detail in our stacks article. Certain principles should be followed when creating a stack for the best results. The rule of stack design should be to clarify ones goals for example stress reduction, memory enhancement or processing speed.

The second guideline would be to choose ingredients which have different mechanisms of action for the same result. For example a stress reduction stack would be ill thought out if it had both vinpocetine and ginkgo, both vasodilators. Far better to pick one vasodilator then move on to another ingredient with a different mechanism of action.

Thirdly. it's important to start off simple, don't go from 0 to 10 nootropics on your first day, this will leave you unable to dicern which has provided you with the most benefit. If you're new to nootorpics, start with 2-3 products (as covered in our stacks article) and build up slowly, assessing tolerance and effects from each on your cognition.
