Biotin is a water soluble B Vitamin that is essential to a number of processes in the body including the growth of skin, nails and hair. Biotin plays a role in the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate and fats, including the production of glucose from protein (gluconeogenesis) and the synthesis of certain fatty acids in the liver.
A deficiency of biotin is more common than many think and certain conditions can increase the body's biotin requirements. High alcohol consumption has been linked to low biotin levels, perhaps through poor dietary habits or increased need at some stage during alcohol metabolism. Pregnant women are frequently recommended biotin as a marginal deficiency can occur due to increased needs of the foetus. This has led some researchers to speculate that biotin requirements should be listed as higher during pregnancy.
Diabetics are frequently recommended biotin supplements due to its role in glucose metabolism. There is some evidence to show biotin supplementation reduces fasting glucose levels. Aside from this, biotin has been used to treat diabetic nerve damage (neuropathy) and evidence suggests biotin may treat brittle nails.
For meeting essential needs, 1000mcg (1mg) is more than sufficient. Individuals who wish to restore low levels or are suffering from a biotin deficiency, may wish to increase their dosage. Consider our 5,000 (5mg) capsules which are more economical. Compare our biotin supplements.
