Butterbur, also known by its botanical name (petasites hybridus) is a plant that is native to asia, north America and Europe that has featured in herbal remedies for hundreds of years. Traditionally used by native Americans as a treatment for headache and inflammation, butterbur has been found to contain beneficial compounds (petasines) which may be beneficial for migraines.
Research confirms the long held traditions. One small study published in 2001 took 60 patients suffering from an average of 3-4 migraines per month and gave them standardised butterbur extract 2 times per day for 12 weeks. The results were positive and researchers concluded that butterbur reduced the frequency, intensity and duration of migraines. The average frequency dropped from 3.3 migraines per month to 1.7 by the end of the trial - roughly half. (Study Link Here)
A further study published in 2004 took 245 migraine patients and placed them in either a placebo group, 50mg twice daily group, or 75mg twice daily group. Migraine frequency was reduced by 48% for the 75mg / twice daily group and statistical analysis confirmed this was significant (Study Abstract Here)
This product features a 15% extract of butterbur standardised to petasines. In addition, the product contains the traditional herb feverfew, also used traditionally for migraines. The feverfew is standardised to 0.8% Parthenolides.
