Please note: This product is Co Enzyme Q10 within an oil softgel. CoQ10 is lipid soluble so an oil based softgel will have superior absorption vs a dry capsule.
Co Enzyme Q10, sometimes called CoQ10 or simply Q10, is a vitamin like compound known as ubiquinone. Ubiquinone is naturally produced within the body and plays a huge role in the production of energy and as a lipid soluble antioxidant when converted to ubiquinol.
Although Q10 is produced naturally within the body, certain circumstances can lead to lowered production or increased needs. Generally as we age, we produce less ubiquinone. On average, levels drop from the age of 30 onwards, while taking a sharper fall in our 50s.
Other than aging, a class of cholesterol lowering medications known as statins can lead to less CoQ10 production. This is due to statins blocking a common enzymatic pathway that leads to both cholesterol synthesis and ubiquinone synthesis. Finally, certain health conditions which predispose someone to a significant amount of oxidative stress can lower and deplete co enzyme Q10 levels.
